Ovarian Cysts During Pregnancy!

Because of the connotations the word "cyst" has, it can be scary to be told you have an ovarian cyst, especially if you are pregnant.
However there really are usually very few risks involved, for mum or baby, when a woman has ovarian cysts during pregnancy.
A cyst is basically a small sac, or pocket, of tissue which can be filled with air, pus or fluid. So an ovarian cyst is one of these little sacs attached to, or inside, an ovary.
They are usually benign (harmless) and disappear without medical intervention within a few weeks or possibly a couple of months.
Only if they become painful, and show no signs of disappearing, will an operation be deemed necessary.
What causes an ovarian cyst?
Most cysts are caused because of a breakdown in the woman's routine ovulation. Usually they do not form during a pregnancy, but are already in place when conception occurs.
It is very possible for a woman to be unaware she has an ovarian cyst before getting pregnant and for it to remain in place several weeks into the pregnancy with no harmful side effects.
There are two most common types of ovarian cyst.
A follicular cyst. A follicle is a fluid-filled sac containing the egg which is released during ovulation. When a follicle becomes enlarged during a menstrual cycle and does not open to release the egg it is considered a follicular cyst.
